Defilla&#8217;s film &#8216;Gisei &#8211; The Sacrifice&#8217; is Carl Orff&#8217;s first stage work. &#8216;Gisei&#8217; is set in the year 902 in a village school in Japan and is about the sacrificial death of a child. The story of the killing, brought about by an unavoidable fate, is presented in the subsequent main plot as if in a cinematic flashback. The DVD shows the world premiere production by John Dew (who was recently awarded the Carl Orff Prize 2012) at the Staatstheater Darmstadt.
